Where to Stay on the Garden Route: Knysna or Plettenberg Bay
Knysna and Plettenberg Bay sit thirty five minutes apart on the N2, and almost everyone planning a Garden Route trip ends up choosing between them. They are not interchangeable. One is a working lagoon town with a creative streak, the other is polished, coastal and unapologetically five star.
The Short Answer
Stay in Knysna if you want the lagoon, the makers, the food and a town that still feels lived in. Stay in Plettenberg Bay if you want beaches, spa afternoons and the highest standard of hospitality on the route. On a short trip, choose Plettenberg Bay, because Robberg, the beaches and a day trip to Storms River are all within easy reach and you only unpack once.
With five nights or more, split them. Two nights in Knysna and three in Plett gives you both moods without a rushed morning in between.

Where to Stay in Knysna
Knysna wraps around its lagoon, so the question is really which edge of the water you want to wake up on. Thesen Island sits in the middle of it and is the most self-contained option. The waterfront puts you closest to the restaurants and markets. The Heads, at the lagoon mouth, trade convenience for the best views on the route.

A converted power station, and the conversion is the point. This was Knysna’s electricity supply from the early 1900s, and the original industrial elements have been left visible and set against genuinely luxurious furnishings, so the building reads as both historical and contemporary rather than either one pretending to be the other. Suites look out over the lagoon. There is the Amani spa, three places to eat, and a pool deck facing the water.
Book it if you want a hotel with a story, and you would rather be on the water than beside a road.

Book it if you want space, and you would rather walk to dinner than drive to it.
Where to Stay in Plettenberg Bay
Plett divides into three quite different stays. There is the headland and beachfront, where you are in the middle of things and a short walk from sand. There is the Bitou River, inland and quieter. And there is the forest above town, which is a different holiday altogether.
The Plettenberg, on the headland
It occupies a rocky headland between two beaches, and the position alone would carry the reputation. It does not need to. Part of The Collection by Liz McGrath, alongside The Cellars-Hohenort in Cape Town and The Marine in Hermanus, so the service standard is the one that group is known for. The rooms face the ocean, the public spaces are designed to be lingered in, and the infinity pool appears to pour into Lookout Beach below.
Book it if you want the most polished stay on the Garden Route, and you are here for the ocean.
Emily Moon River Lodge, Bitou River
Riverside rather than beachfront, and the swap is deliberate. Sixteen suites sit on the banks of the Bitou River, individually decorated with pieces the owners have collected across Africa and Asia, each with its own deck and views over the wetlands. Two are family suites, which makes this the practical choice if you are travelling with children. Emily’s Restaurant has become a destination for people not staying there, and Simon’s Bar handles wood fired pizza upstairs. It is five minutes’ drive from town.
Book it if you want character over uniformity, and you do not mind a short drive to the sea.
Tsala Treetop Lodge, in the forest
A Relais & Châteaux property set into the Harkerville Forest, roughly ten kilometres from Plett and about halfway to Knysna, so it works as a base for both. Ten treehouse suites and six two bedroom villas are raised into the canopy, each with a private infinity pool, a fireplace and glass walls that make the distinction between room and forest largely theoretical. Zinzi, the Pan-African restaurant people travel for, is here rather than in town.
Book it if you want to disappear for two or three nights and let the forest do the work. The suites are adults only, so this is not the one for a family trip.

Is it better to stay in Knysna or Plettenberg Bay?
Plettenberg Bay if you have three nights or fewer, because it is the better base for day trips and it has the beaches. Knysna if food, markets and being able to walk everywhere matter more to you than swimming. With five nights or more, do both.
How many nights do you need on the Garden Route?
Three is the practical minimum and works well from a single base. Seven is the length most people say afterwards they wish they had booked, because it adds Wilderness at the western end and Tsitsikamma at the eastern one without any long driving days.
Do you need a car?
Yes. The towns are strung along the N2 and public transport between them is not a realistic option for this kind of trip. Both Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are walkable once you are there, but you will not get between them, or out to Robberg and Storms River, without one.
Which is better for whale watching?
Plettenberg Bay, on the open bay, is the stronger base for both boat trips and land based viewing. Southern Right whales are in these waters from roughly July to November, with the best sightings in September and October.
